One thing you may not know about me is that I love a good zombie story. But I haven’t really read any zombie books, it’s mainly been movies. So, when I found out that a personal favourite indie author is writing a zombie novel, I couldn’t wait to read it.
C.T Ortega has never disappointed me with his array of fantasy novels from the Warfare of the Gods series which combines God’s and mythology from different countries and eras to create an epic fantasy saga to his equally fantastic standalones each one unique but still set in the same world.
This time, we are transported to Hawaii, where we meet Zoe, a strong, stubborn teenager who has already been through much trauma, having lost her father the year before. Not only this, but her mother is set on trying to resurrect him by using any and all types of magic, voodoo, hoodoo, and any medicines visiting tribes and communities bring. However, disaster occurs after the vikings land and bring their own medicines. This leads to the community fighting for their lives and fighting off “zumbies.”
This book was such a fantastic read. Each character had their own unique mannerisms and clear personalities, which set them apart. You had Zoe, the girl who was forced to grow up quickly and take the role of daughter and mother, and then of course you have Bohio, the young, immature boy who is obsessed with Zoe and so dislikes anyone who receives more of Zoe’s attention than he does.
Out of all his standalones, this one is definitely my favourite. The pacing of the novel is perfect with hardly any downtime. And of course, the brutality and gruesome scenes that come naturally to any zombie story are wonderfully described in all their grizzly detail.
How could she speak emotions? Words carry only a shadow of the tidal wave of feelings, drawing her very soul
Zoe, Death’s loving Embrace
Plus, there is a little surprise and extra little bonus in this one in that myself and my amazing co-host and American bestie, Holly (@azdesert_bookworm) have been immortalised as a character. Caleb often names some of his characters after his friends and those who have supported him on his writing journey, and we are honoured to be included in this. Plus, who doesn’t want to start in a zombie book!! So when you read about Holli or Lizz, that’s us!!
Overall, this book was a fantastic adventure just like all of Ortega’s books, but this one turned up the fun and excitement a few more notches.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – A thrilling, fun, action packed adventure which will have you hooked until the end.
