Book Review – Plea to a Frozen God by C.M Skiera

As you may know by now, I love to support indie authors and read more lesser-known works. I also love the fantasy genre, so I was very interested when this book was brought to my attention. Plea to a frozen god is the 4th published novel by C.M Skiera.

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.

Plea to a frozen god is set in cold world of Nuuna. It is a planet made up of 7 realms, also known of as Septum Dominions, with each one ruled by a different group, who believe in different gods. The protagonist of the story, Prince Ligo and Divine Mystic, Riggan, are part of Fiegardia, the southernmost realm named after the god, Fieg.

For a long time, Fiegardia has been under the influence of The Triplets,  3 volcanoes, with the power to bury the whole town under ash and lava. But there are rumours of a Septum which has the power to control The Triplets to prevent an eruption.

The night before Ligo is due to wed the daughter to the King of Drachia, all hell breaks loose as the Drachia’s men turn against Fiegardia.  Ligo escapes with the help of Riggan, and their adventure to the rumoured Septum to rescue their kingdom and take back Fiegardia begins.

What follows is a story of bravery, strength, brutality, adventure, and a bit of magic. In Plea to a frozen god it isn’t just Drachia who are out to get them, but nature and the weather as well. We see the trio face starvation, freezing weather condition, along with multiple attacks, all to save their realm.

From the snowstorms and icy rivers to the underground tunnels and the angry volcanoes, the world created within this novel are superb. The description of the realms down to the smallest detail provided us with such a clear, vivid view of the landscapes that it felt that you were right there with them, fighting through fierce winds, and blizzards.

In this world, everything was out to get them, and the danger never let up, which added a layer of tension and suspense throughout the story. I especially liked that we were given small extracts of history of the world and its gods at the beginning of each chapter, which provided further insights into their lives, religion, and the overall world.

I also especially loved the multiple points of view for each chapter. You may know by now that this is a favourite tool of mine, but only if done right, and this was the perfect example of how multiple POVs can add so much life to a story.

This epic fantasy was filled with twists and turns throughout to keep the reader engaged and on the edge of their seat. Another aspect which needs to be called out are the character arcs. Each of our main characters all faced their own demons or personal hurdles to overcome and being able to witness each of them grow and strengthen, even as their bodies weakened, added that extra stroke of empathy you couldn’t help but feel for them.

From Ligo’s lack of self confidence in himself to Seargent Fry’s initial distrust of witches and magic, we see each character forced to face their fears, their doubts, their mistrusts in order to work together as a team to overcome each obstacle that gets in their way.

If you like epic fantasies by writers such as Brandon Sanderson, Robin Hobb, and George RR Martin, I would highly recommend giving Skiera a go. His world creation skills and his character building combined to create a fantastical, dark, thrilling adventure which will surely stay with you after the last page.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – An action packed, epic fantasy filled with deceit, magic, adventure and so much more.
