Ahead of each episode of our podcast, Speaking LITerally I like to read the latest book of the author we are interviewing. This time it was Hadley Grey, an indie, self-published author who originally wrote suspense romance but has recently delved into another sub-genre, sci-fi romance.
When it comes to sub-genres it is so difficult to get the balance just right – add just a bit of a love life into a sci-fi and it’s still just a science fiction, but add too much romance and not enough science it just becomes a romance. But, this author blended the two genres perfectly.
About Seducing the Scientist
Mabel, a hard-working scientist, has discovered something life-changing for a group called the Sages. So, she does the only thing she thinks is logical, she sneaks on board their ship to leave a note with an important message. In and out, nice and quick…she hoped.
Then we have Rainer, the captain of the ship and one of the Sages. For 500 years he has had visions of this girl, mostly glimpses but enough to know he is in love, and is desperate to meet her and never let her go. Then Mabel arrives and he realises she is the girl he has been waiting for.
This is a story of discovery, finding out who you really are and where you came from and what matters most in life.
The character progression for both the FMC and MMC are fascinating to watch, as they both need each other at different times, even the alpha male, Rainer, leans on Mabel for support and guidance. They both grow individually and together as the story continues and you see Mabel come out of her shell and the captain learning what true happiness is.
One of the many things I loved about this book is that even the side characters stood out and each had their own unique personalities. From Cadel’s slightly cheeky yet protective side to the caring, lovable, hard to dislike Ku-Aya who became an important part of Mabel’s life on the ship very suddenly.
But, this story wasn’t simply about life on the ship with a fair bit of spice, the science fiction side to this novel did not disappoint either. From alien beasts to doctored DNA, the twists and turns in this story kept me engaged from page 1 all the way to the end. I loved both the love story and the sci-fi elements and everything in between.
This is the first book in The Sages story and I am very excited to read more about these characters’ adventures in book 2.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – A superb dark sci-fi romance – be prepared for emotion, spice and adventure all brought together with fascinating characters and an engaging storyline.
