Top Book Releases for August 2022

I can’t believe we are coming to the end of July, where has the month gone?? This month I am starting a new feature, which is inspired by my friend’s own feature, over at Desert Bookshelf

So, without further ado here are my most anticipated book releases for August.

Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I have only read Daisy Jones at the Six, but I have recently bought Malibu Rising and so I was very interested to see she has another novel coming out in August. This time the story is centred around Carrie Soto, a retired tennis player who was the best in the world. However, since retiring a new hot shot has appeared on the block and is threatening to break her legacy. What does she do about it? Does she accept that she is 37 and should let the younger ones succeed? Haha no, she comes back for one last season to defend her title.

Publication date: 28th August 2022

Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood

I haven’t reviewed it yet, but I have to say I loved The Love Hypothesis, so I am very excited to see that Ali is back with a brand new novel. This time we follow, Bee Königswasser, who is ecstatic to be offered a role with NASA as lead on a neuro-engineering project…that is until she finds out she will have to work with her grad school arch-nemesis, the handsome, Levi Ward. I love that she is sticking with the women in STEM angle and I am really looking forward to this.

Publication Date: 23rd August 2022

The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell

I absolutely loved Maggie’s Hamnet and so I am very excited that her next novel is coming out in August. This time we are in Florence, Italy in the 1560s. Lucrezia, the third daughter of the infamous, Cosimo De’ Medici is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo. Free to wonder at all its treasures, she devotes herself to her own artistic pursuits. But then her older sister dies on the eve of her marriage, and she is thrust into the limelight. The duke who was due to marry her sister quickly requests her hand in marriage and her father accepts. Before she knows it she is forced into a troubled court where she is not welcome by those around her. This sounds like a fantasic historical fiction and I can’t wait.

Publication Date: 30th August 2022

The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean

I was instantly intrigued by the title. The Book Eaters is a fantasy horror about stories and fairytales with family and love at its dark heart.

Hidden across England and Scotland there are six old Book Eater families, who exist on the edges of society and survive on a diet of stories and legends. However, Devon Fairweather’s second child is born a dreaded Mind Eater, who consumes not stories but the minds and souls of humans. She decides to flee before the child is transformed into a weapon…or worse. This sounds right up my street and I will definitely be consuming this (in a metaphorical sense, of course, not literally, don’t worry I am not a book eater)

Publication Date: 18th August 2022

The Dragon’s Promise by Elizabeth Lim (Six Crimson Cranes Book #2)

This is another series I have had on my shelf for a while, having received Six Crimson Cranes through the Fairy Loot crate, but the sequel is out next month.

Shiori’s quest continues. After making a deathbed promise to return the dragon’s pearl to its rightful owner, she knows she must carry out this promise. But this is not an easy feat as the pearl thrums with malevolent power which works with her at one point and then turns against her, threatening to shatter her family and sever the threads of fate that binds her to her true love, Takkan. This sounds like it will be an epic adventure, I better get on and read the first one…

Publication Date: 30th August 2022

The Women could Fly by Megan Giddings

This time we have a dystopic novel which confronts prejudices on both gender and race.

Since Josephine Thomas’ mother went missing she has heard every theory about the reason for her dissapearance from kidnapping to murder to running away and taking on a new identity and then there were rumours she was a witch. This is especially concerning because in a world where witches exist, women, especially black women like herself can be put on trial for witchcraft if they believe her to be acting suspiciously.

But 14 years after her mother’s passing the state has mandated that all women have to marry by the age of 30, or be enrolled onto a registry which allow them to be monitored, thus losing many rights. At 28 she isn’t sure marriage is what she wants and with that one last request from her mother’s will unfulfilled she leaves her regular life behind to hope to understand her mother more. This sounds like it could be a witchy crossover with Handmaids Tale and I must admit I am intrigued.

Publication Date: 18th August 2022

The It Girl by Ruth Ware

Bestselling crime author, Ruth Ware is back next month with her next novel, It Girl.

Loved by some. Hated by others… someone has murder in mind for this it girl.

To Hannah, April had it all. Confidence, money, brains, friends, good looks. She was someone Hannah, a shy girl aspired to. When they are pushed together as room mates they soon become best friends and Hannah’s life is transformed into one that she could only ever dream of. However, all is not as it seems, someone doesnt like April, someone hated her so much, they killed her.

Ten years later, Hannah is happily married and pregnant with her first child but then things are turned upside down when someone tries to dig up her past and April’s.

I love a good thriller and this sounds like it could be exciting.

Publication Date: 4th August 2022

Girl Crush by Florence Given

I recently heard of this on Instagram and the first thing that struck my attention was the cover. Girl Crush is a dark, feminist comedy where we follow, Eartha on a wild, weird and seductive modern-day exploration as she commences life as an openly bisexual woman whilst also becoming a viral sensation. I haven’t read any feminist comedies before, so this could be a good place to start.
