Book Review – Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

We made it! The final book in the Shadow and Bone trilogy. It has been such an adventure with Mal and Alina that I admit I never wanted it to end. But here we go…..

We start off where the second book finished, Alina once again must prepare to face off against the Darkling as well as seek out the final amplifier to save herself and the world.

In my opinion, this book was amazing. It felt like the writer really took it up a notch when it came to drama, action and tension. The amount of twists will leave you always second guessing to the end but will also leave you wanting more each time you put it down.

So many times I found myself blown away by a beautiful quote that I had to stop and ponder it, to really absorb it’s meaning. This to me, is a sign of superb writing. One of my favourite quotes which will forever stay with me is:

“Tonight there was just this too-quiet room, the ache of loss, knowledge deep and final as the tolling of a bell; something good has gone.”

So beautiful, and there are so many like this in the book.

The flow of Bardugo’s writing is so well executed that you easily get lost in the book for hours on end, losing track of all sense of time.

The ending was both superb, beautiful but also somewhat lacking in that it left you wanting so much more. I was left with such a thirst for knowledge of the character’s background and other events but I don’t feel that it could ever have even truly satisfied.

This was definitely the best of the trilogy and it is something I will definitely read again.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – a superb read from start to finish, a beautiful fantasy novel which was filled with stunning quotes and great writing on the whole.
